In spring of 1998, I went to hospital to have a regular X-ray examination of my chest for higgh blood pressure. A shadow was found in my left lung. However, I did not feel anything out of the ordinary so I would just ignore it and kept on with my daily routines. In november of 1998, the doctor called and suggested that I go into the hospital for another medical examination. The result of this one revealed that I was suffering from lung cancer.

In October 1999, my sister Nyet Yun was diagnosed with third stage colon cancer. The vigorous cancer cells had spread to the middle part of the colon and her situation was very serious. Despite of our financial hitch, we quickly admitted her into a private hospital in Ipoh for an immediate operation. One part of her colon near the anus was removed and an artificial anus was replaced. The doctor reminded us to send my sister back for chemotherapy treatment after the operation.
